Quick triva on BAA3...

A quick piece of trivia on BAA3. Ban-Tam, the custom bike builder who's shop is the starting point of the ride, was inspired by custom-bike builder Shinya Kimura and his partner Ayu. It came from a conversation Lin and I had with them on the meaning of the name of their shop Chabott Engineering. FTR, Shinya is has hospitable as Ban-Tam is with visitors to his shop.

Hey Everyone,

Sorry about the absence. Between the Holidays, new political book, winter (yechh) and working on projects., I've been pretty busy.

I'll be at the NYC MC show at the Javits Center this Saturday and next weekend will be stopping by the Boston MC show. Look for guy with grey beard and Bikers are Animals shirt.

Did an interview with Good Time Charlie Brechtel at bikersinnercircle.com. Go to YouTube and type in Paul Jamiol and check it out. I will post it here soon. Charlie's a class act and has been great to us. Any resemblance to GT Charlie, our riding muskrat in Book 2 is intentional. Next week I'll be doing an interview with Ed Kuhlenkamp and the crew over at PitPassRadio.com.

Bike is away for the winter but I did manage to get in a couple of December rides.

No New Years resolutions but I am planning to do more photography. Really enjoy plus I got a couple of manual lenses I want to play around with. Lin got me a nice German oldie for Xmas and it takes beautiful pics. Will be shooting MC's but also some other things.

And on the Bikers are Animals upcoming books...I'll start number 4 mid-year. Tenatively the title is Bikers are Animals 4 - Working and Playing. I'm having the critters' young ones show what the older critters do for work and what and where they ride. They'll be a bunch of young critters to introduce them starting with a pint-size Talon (haven't named him yet.) It'll be fun to do and maybe show a little more on how we bikers ain't all that bad.

I'll post some New York pics next week. In the mean time...keep the rubber side down...P

I've teased a lot on this blog as the book came about with roughs, partial pages and close crops. Now that it's out there, here are completed pages 14 and 15 as the critters get ready to leave the parking lot at the start of their ride to the mountains.

All pages are full color with a whole lotta detail. Lin and I are really proud how it came out and hope kids everywhere get to see how cool these riding critters are.

There are a couple of new characters introduced in Bikers are Animals 3 - On the Road. Ban-Tam the ridin' and bike buildin' rooster is one of them. He doesn't ride in BAA3. The crew meets at his custom bike shop before they head out on their ride. He's shown above riding, which he'll be doing in Bikers are Animals 5 - Let's Ride!...Oops, cat is out of the saddlebag!...I'm planning a BAA4 and 5...keep it on the low for now...more later...Paul

I've been asked if anyone can get a tattoo of the critters in my books. The answer is yes with two caveats...first, as long as the "about to be tattooed" is of age and can legally get one. We do not under any circumstances condone under-age youngsters getting tattoos (we may have stick-ons for the younger set in the future.)

The second is a very important caveat. These images are copyrighted and the only tattooist that has my permission to use these characters is my good friend Bill Thomas of Rosebud Tattoo in Sanford, ME.

Bill is a serious motorcyclist and has been around the motorcycle world as long as I have. He knows his stuff and has been a sounding board on the BAA books. I respect both his opinion and his art. When the weekend rolls around, it’s time to hop on a motorcycle and have an adventure. That’s the plan as Trash the bear and Akorn the squirrel meet up with their biker animal friends. They'll be going on a ride to the mountains for an overnight stay at their friend's cabin, in this new release. The group plans the trip for weeks, splitting up into small groups to handle every aspect of the trip from shopping for food to leading the ride. Right before heading out on their motorcycles, they discuss one more important topic: riding safely.
Bikers Are Animals 3 - On the Road provides a colorful, easy-to-read story that includes gentle reminders of respect and working together while having fun. The author’s fun-loving critters check over the motorcycles before riding them and watch out for each other once on the road. At the cabin, they play, relax and get together at a campfire to share stories, sing and enjoy their friendship. On the safety page at the end of the book, the critters spell out biker safety rules for children and adults. Children are reminded that real kids should always wear a helmet and listen to their adults.
This is the third in a series of children’s books by author/cartoonist Paul Jamiol that focuses on biker animals who enjoy being with their friends and doing the thing that bonds them...riding motorcycles. This is the last teaser for Bikers are Animals 3 - On the Road. This is a rough of Zag, Zig, Slick and Akorn in the campfire scene. Our two cool riding gorillas are toasting bannas while Slick and Akorn recap the day. The full scene has all the critters around the campfire having a great time.

Linda and I looked at the final proofs on Thursday and all that needs to be done is fix one spelling issue and we are good to go. It looks like we'll have a book in a couple of weeks right on schedule. So to our critters...Start your engines!

Biker Kidz and BAA Critters join together...

The Bikers are Animals Critters have joined up with Belt Drive Betty in her effort to raise some some money for the education and prevention of child sexual abuse.

They will be a part of the Biker Kidz 2012 Calendar. Each page will have a BAA Critter introducing a Biker Kidz. A portion ($10) of each calendar sale will go to either the Little Warriors or the Katlynn Stinnett Memorial Foundation. The buyer has a choice of which organization to support or can buy two calendars and support both.

Slick lands back cover of BAA3...

Slick is one of the few, if not the only, riding pachyderms in the motorcycle world. That distinction plus his cool riding demeanor landed him the back cover of Bikers are Animals 3 - On the Road. When I asked Slick about this honor and how, if at all, it would affect him, Slick responded, "My agent will be in touch with you."

Bandit, the hard-riding cool little dog from book one has been chosen for the cover of BAA3 - On the Road. When asked if the fact that his real-life counterpart is our dog and that might have something to do with it, he barked and growled that he is the best rider of the bunch and his bike is totally cool. Seeing I don't know how many of the critters check this blog, I'll just say the competition was tough and close. Lin was the final judge. Bandit will be on the front cover followed by that dresser-riding pachyderm Slick on the back cover.

The rough sketch and line-drawing is a preview of Bandit rolling down the highway in the cover shot. Look for BAA 3 this fall.

Motorcyclepedia, the official host museum to the Antique Motorcycle Foundation, is opening to the public for the first time on April 16. Shinya's Mod Eater

Shinya Kimura is without a doubt my favorite bike builder. He is incredibly gifted. His partner Ayu is also gifted and brings an incredible karma into their mix. Lin and I were delighted to meet them at their shop Chabott Engineering in Azusa, CA last July. Shinya recently created a sculpture from pieces of metal and named it Mod Eater. You can see it on their site at www.chabottengineering.com

I took his piece a little further and put it on the ocean floor. Shinya's motorcycles and his non-bike creations inspire...that's what this illustration is about. One artist's originality and creativity inspiring another.

This is a logo I just did for the "Critter Cruise" to be held this July in Massachusetts by a group of bikers. It's for a good cause and is a melding of bikers and hot rodders getting together to make it happen. I'll post a poster with all info when it gets closer to the event. We went down to a bike show in Providence, RI over the weekend. It was great to be around motorcycles and mc people on a winter day in January. Really liked the look of this bobber. Got a chance to sit on it and it felt bad to the bone. However, if in my stable, it would only be for short rides. Hard tail, springer front end, small seat, foot clutch, hand shift, no front brake and short pipes with no mufflers. This is one a hard ride but I love the style and looks totally cool. Old school...hard school!

The question I get asked most is how do these drawings start out. Here's a rough of Crag from BaA2 and how he ended up. In the rough, he was pretty aggressive and showing both attitude and teeth. The second of two full-color centerfolds I did for the Motorcyclist's Post back in 2009 to introduce some of the BAA characters to the world. Howlena's bike was completely made up around a v-twin engine. Bandit is based on our real-life Bandit (a cool Shiba Inu.) The blue boots on his paws come from the blue boots we put on him on those freezing winter nights when he needs to go out.

Shifta is one of the understated characters in the book but I really like him. His bike looks like a Norton because I had two Nortons and loved them. Mine did not have a side shift or mouse-trap sissy bar.

Zig and Zag are Linda's favorites. Zig's bike has a '59 Caddy taillight because I love '59 Caddy taillights! He went through a lot of bananas to earn that banana patch. Zag's bike is faster. How do I know?...because I drew him and I say so...LOL!

Akorn had yet to get his nut-shell helmet and I cleaned up Trash's tattoo for the book. I used my brother's '86 FLHTC as a model for Slick's dresser. That's the factory color. I put Roag on a V-8 because V-8 motorcycles fascinate me and what better engine for a ridin' rhino than a "Charger".

Me back in the late seventies... my '67 Norton stuffed in a Matchless frame. I added Norton P11 scrambler tank, new handlebars, headlight holders, highway bar/pegs, no front fender, K&N's, oil cooler and custom seat. On the "fun" 1 to 10 scale...this bike was a solid 12!

Our dog Bandit bookin' down the road on a cool Fall evening astride his custom chopper. I added a winter background, some lights and a bag of toys and used this one for the Xmas cards we send out. Every year, Bandit is on a different bike for the cards. FTR...the real Bandit is a Shiba Inu.

This was done for a postcard for my Classic Motorcycle Calendar © back in the early 1990's. Bikers are Animals wasn't even a thought back then. I just like the idea of a couple of animals riding on a motorcycle.

The motorcycle was my old '86 Guzzi Lemans with a Dr. John's 2 into 1 exhaust with Supertrapp muffler. The '86 had a 16" front wheel with integrated brakes. I bought it new and rode it for 15 years or until my back gave out from leaning forward. First thing I did was add Corbin seat. Stock seat was like riding on a 2x4. This bike gave me some really kick-butt riding miles.

Motorcycling cartoonist Paul Jamiol has done it again with “Bikers Are Animals 2,” a sequel to his “Bikers Are Animals” published in July, 2009. Sub-titled “The Rest of the Crew,” Jamiol brings us another dozen endearing creatures who like to ride motorcycles, including Classik, a coyote who loves antique motorcycles, and Craig, an alligator who would rather ride than hang around a hot swamp all day. As with the first “Animals,” there is a coloring section with all the characters in line art. Jamiol's basic message is one of inclusiveness, joy, and the absence of prejudice. Every motorcyclist with small children or grandkids should gift them this book. It is fun and character-building in an entertaining way that children can enjoy. Built by Eddie Gillies and Don Cardinal of XX Cycles, MA. These guys are true craftsman and think outside the box. This bike started out with '68 Sportster cases and ended up with what you see here. It features XR1000 heads, machined cylinders, 5-speed H-D tranny, custom made frame, dual carbs, oil in frame and the list goes on. It's reminiscent of the early Vincent Rapides aka the "Plumbers Nightmare". Eddie says there is a Phil Vincent influence in his subconscious. Eddie and Don's only building guidelines are...no chrome, no extended front ends and no hard tails. They build some really nice bikes.

Recently at the AMCA Rhinebeck Meet, Frank Westfall showed off his fully-restored Ray Courtney Henderson. It is an absolute eye-popper; a bike that could capture best-in-show at any concours or custom bike meet today, despite the fact that it was constructed by Courtney in the 1930s. Went though some old pics the other day to find these for a friend. I did this for the opening of the AMA's Motorcycle Heritage Museum in Westerville, OH back in 1990. It was 40' long. The exhibit was called "Women in Motorcycling" and featured my pencil drawings of some pretty cool women and their accomplishments in the world of motorcycling. It was fun and an honor to do.

Last week, Lin and I got a chance to meet with world-renowned custom bike builder and artist Shinya Kimura and his lovely companion Ayu at their shop in Azsua, CA. Both are a class act and fun to be with...just nice down-to-earth folks. His motorcycles are simply astounding.

This blog thing is new to be I've been a little apprehensive about it since I started it. I'm going to try and spend some time up here.
